Two of NASA's four aircraft that approximate the orbiter during reentry,
used by astronauts to practice landing. The STAs are Grumman C-11s. But
not run of the mill C-11s, because those have nowhere near enough drag!
These are fitted with special purpose engines that can be switched into
full reverse thrust mode at high velocities, letting the aircraft
perform more like a "flying brick" than a powered airplane. |
