Thursday I flew in to ZRH and explored central Zürich.
I started at the Swiss National Museum. Although I found that I didn't
know enough background material to appreciate most of the exhibits -
the museum was full of detail but didn't contain descriptions of the
broad stories, their German descriptions did serve as a useful
language refresher for me.
Next I looked through the Niederdorf region to find lunch (a roast beef
and chocolate sandwich and a cheese sandwich) and make my first try at
ordering in German (so-so: I confused my waiter a bit and some English
was used).
After lunch, and a stop by my hotel to shower, I explored central Zürich,
walking along the Limmat River that divides downtown, the Bahnhofstrasse
shopping district, and seeing parks and churches. Afterwards I went by
Niederdorf for dinner (raclette) and then collapsed in bed from
the overnight flight to Zürich.
I visited ETH-Zürich Friday. Saturday I visited the Zürich
train station travel agency (HB Reisebüro) to work out my travel
plan and left for Lausanne.
I came back Wednesday on my way to the airport to head home, stopping
by Sprüngli for a chocolate mocha and chocolates to bring home.
